Technology runs the world and the production of biodiesel is in the forefront as a source of energy. It seems that daily there is something new to learn and this knowledge allows us to live our lives with relative ease. That includes the use of biodiesel fuel to run your vehicles as well as your neighbors. With the ever increasing prices of gasoline and the reliance on foreign oil, biodiesel fuel offers a way of saving big bucks at the pump.

Biodiesel has been around for many years. Interest is being sparked in procuring this fuel either from outlet stores or by producing biodiesel in your backyard. This fuel is environmentally friendly. You can continue to use your diesel vehicle without having to convert anything to accommodate the use of biodiesel fuel. Synthetic rubber hoses and components power cars and it is due to this that drivers do not have to fully convert the diesel engines to take on biodiesel fuel.

Biodiesel increases the fuel economy and because of the numerous road trials conducted, this type of fuel can be used at the same torque and horsepower that an average petrol diesel engine uses.

Engines using petrol diesel wear out faster. By using biodiesel fuel, the engines last longer as the lubricity levels are lower. Less pollution escapes into the environment due to an increase in the ignition rating.

There are many reasons to use biodiesel as a great source of energy. It is cost effective, friendly to the environment and you can actually produce it in your own backyard. By searching the internet, you will be able to find many forums that will encourage the use of biodiesel fuel and where you can locate outlets that sell this fuel as well as the accessories to enable you to produce your own biodiesel. All it takes is patience and a strict adherence to the instructions given. All ingredients are found locally and you can even use vegetable oil that has been used and this may be obtained from your local restaurants.

Biodiesel fuel as a source of energy is clean and low priced. All kinds of vehicle, automobiles, buses, trucks and other forms of heavy transportation is able to take advantage of the positive results that the use of biodiesel fuels offer. It saves a fleet company thousands of dollars and you, the consumer, will find left over money for fun things to do with your family.

Why not look into biodiesel as a form of energy that will allow you to use in your personal vehicles. Your neighbors may actually jump on the bandwagon and will want to purchase your clean fuel, thereby generate an income for you without you even trying.

Producing biodiesel contributes to a clean environment and comes from a combination of vegetable oil and diesel. Your engine runs more efficiently and the air you breathe does not have additional pollutants from biodiesel. Also, biodiesel is cheaper to use than with the use of diesel. You can even learn how to produce biodiesel yourself.

It takes time to produce biodiesel but according to the people who produce this alternative fuel, it is easy to make. Safety precautions will need to be taken into consideration and it will take patience to wait for the finished production.

What do you need to make biodiesel?

* 1 liter of vegetable oil purchased at a local food store. Later, you will be able to purchase oil that has been used but since you are new at this, start with new vegetable oil.

* 200ml of 99% pure methanol. Check the label to make sure this is what you have.

* You will need a lye catalyst by using potassium hydroxide.

* A blender to mix the ingredients.

* Measuring containers for the use of methanol and oil.

* ½ liter translucent white HDPE container with bung and a cap that screws on.

* 2 funnels which will have to fit the HDPE container

* Three 2 liter PET bottles. One will be used for setting and the second will be used for washing.

* A thermometer to heat up the ingredients to the right temperature.

All ingredients will need to be accurately measured since that will guarantee your success in producing biodiesel fuel.

Follow these steps next…

* Wipe all the equipment you will be using dry.

* Transfer the methanol into the HDPE container using a funnel and carefully add the lye, screwing the cap on tightly. Mix the methanol and lye by rolling the bottle a few times. Do not shake the bottle; it can be dangerous.

* Heat the oil to 55C and put it in the blender

* Add the methanol and lye mixture to the oil in the blender

* Blend on low speed for 20 minutes or so.

* Transfer the mixture into the PET bottle which will settle the mixture.

* Leave the PET bottle alone for 12 to 24 hours.

Once the settling has completed, the entire mixture will be darker at the bottom and lighter on top. The mixture that is lighter is known as the biodiesel. Transfer the mixture into the washing bottle. You have now produced your own biodiesel fuel. Test your product and if unsure, make another batch. Before you know it, you will have a smooth running vehicle with the use of biodiesel fuel. Your friends will envy you for all the savings you will experience over their use of a gas pump that only promises increased gas prices.

Producing fuel is not a fast process and purchasing a biodiesel kit makes a lot of sense. You cannot pump fuel into your car anytime you need to, so a biodiesel kit should be given serious consideration. You will need to learn to economize your time.

When you buy your own biodiesel kit, the kit is delivered to your door. It comes with all of the parts needed and instructions to assemble and to collect the ingredients. Several safety precautions are already built in, so the kit is somewhat foolproof.

Knowing how your own processor operates will enable you to get the necessary parts, build it, test it and hope all the left over parts were not really needed. Lots of money is saved and of course, the satisfaction of making your own biodiesel processor, using the kit purchased, is warranted.

Biodiesel kits are not cheap. They can range anywhere from a couple hundred dollars to several thousand dollars. It all depends how much you are willing to spend and the amount of fuel you will need. Build your own kit if you want to spend just the bare minimum.

The biodiesel kit is fully stocked with safety features. Not only can these kits make fuel, they do so in the safest way possible. When shopping for a biodiesel kit, look for a closed system processor as this processor will keep the fumes from escaping due to the chemical reaction. If you were to inhale these fumes, you can suffer some detrimental effects.

Purchasing a biodiesel kit allows you to avoid the mess, the confusion and the frustration that seems to occur when building something from the very beginning. You get a product that has been designed by engineers with your safety in mind. You spend less time building with the biodiesel kit and more time making the fuel.

A biodiesel kit is a valuable investment that will save you time, money and stress. You can make biodiesel fuel in just 15 minutes and all it will cost you is 46 cents per gallon. Try it. You just may like the entire biodiesel process.

Which Oil To Use For Biodiesel?

April 15, 2009 by admin

Who would have ever thought that using cooking oil would provide a means to create biodiesel fuel? Alternative fuels are needed and when the fuel is created from vegetable oil, it is now reality. Vegetable oil is known as biodiesel and is found at regular gas station pumps. It is usually sold as a blend of biodiesel and regular diesel. Under the name of B100, pure biodiesel is sold in some outlets.

How does vegetable oil diesel oil work? It is because vegetable oil and diesel fuel have similar ingredients; this makes the use of vegetable oil a viable alternative. When vegetable oil undergoes production, it becomes even more similar to diesel fuel so that even a vehicle who runs on diesel fuel will be able to also run on biodiesel fuel. There is no need to purchase a conversion kit.

What are some of the benefits of using vegetable oil diesel over regular diesel fuel?

* Simply put; it’s renewable. The ingredients will not run out. Unlike with the oil worldwide. Because plants are used to produce biodiesel fuel, these plants can be continuously grown.

* Biodiesel fuel burns clean and no harmful toxins will be emitted into the environment.

* Biodiesel can be cheaply produced. The ingredients used to produce this clean fuel is not costly and this enables the cost of biodiesel to stay affordable.

There are other sources of alternative fuel but the use of vegetable oil has benefits over these sources.

* With the use of electric power, you would have to purchase a new vehicle or undergo an expensive conversion. With biodiesel, you wouldn’t have to buy a new vehicle or convert your existing engine.

* If you live in America’s Northwest, you know that solar power is not very consistent. Energy varies and is not reliable for long periods of time in order to operate a vehicle.

Because vegetable oil is readily available, is more reliable and cheaper, its use makes more sense than the use of other sources of alternative fuel. Biodiesel is found at gas stations or you can produce it yourself. The price of regular gas is rising and the need for alternative fuel is also rising.

Eventually it will become the primary source of fuel for consumer’s to run their vehicles. If you do own a diesel vehicle, you can run your vehicle on biodiesel fuel and you can do it now. Because of the benefits, there really is no reason why you don’t take advantage of this cheaper and safer alternative source of biodiesel oil.

Using A Biodiesel Plant

The increasing demand for fuel has prompted the use of vegetable oil, a biodiesel plant. Renewed interest has been resurrected for the use of biodiesel and production began in the late 1990’s. It is a safe fuel and the environment responds favorably to its use. The production of biodiesel has minimum impact on the environment and construction and operation of a biodiesel plant benefits both the commercial and the rural neighborhoods.

Jobs are created and in 2006, building biodiesel plants and the operation of such plants is expected to result in approximately 39,000 permanent jobs by the year 2015. The dependence of the United States to foreign crude oil can be reduced by 242 million barrels by 2015. Billions of dollars will remain in the United States’ economy. Approximately $627 million dollars will remain in Americans’ pockets to be spent in the US economy and not support foreign oil.

There will be an increased tax revenue for the Federal Government by approximately $8.3 billion dollars and for the state and local governments, an approximate $650 million dollars.

Biodiesel can be used in existing industrial plants such as grain facilities or feed mills. There is the necessary room and equipment for moving feedstock and the biodiesel operation cost is reduced. When overheads are kept low, the profits are reaped from the produced biodiesel.

The price of petroleum continues to increase. Then biodiesel production is increased, it will continue to improve the feedstock crops’ value. Should the demand for soy based biodiesel increase, the crop cash would boost to $5.2 billion dollars by 2010. The average net farm income would increase by $300 million per year. And a bushel of soybean would increase by 17 cents.

Not only will the environment benefit from the cleaner production of biodiesel, the rural communities in America will see significant increases in the income generated by an increase in jobs and the user friendly biodiesel fuel in diesel vehicles.

If there is a biodiesel plant in your community, become familiar with the operations and the many uses that are being generated. Search the internet for the positive aspects of using biodiesel plants and how it is produced.

The Cost Of Making Biodiesel

April 15, 2009 by admin

What is the cost of making biodiesel? Not much. Considering the benefits of biodiesel fuel, the cost is far cheaper than fossil fuel. Not only in preparing it but also in purchasing biodiesel fuel.

Lets compare biodiesel prices with other fuel costs, mile for mile.

* 100% biodiesel fuel cost on the average 8.2 cents a mile and you can drive 37 miles to the gallon in the city and on the highway, 45 miles to the gallon.

* Unleaded gas costs on the average 6.9 cents a mile and you get 25 miles to the gallon in the city and on the highway, 31 miles to the gallon.

* 80% petroleum based diesel and 20% biodiesel costs 6.0 cents per mile and you get 37 miles to the gallon in the city and on the highway, 45 miles to the gallon.

* With the conventional, petroleum based diesel, it will cost an average of 5.2 cents a mile and you can drive 38 miles to the gallon in the city and on the highway, 46 miles to the gallon.

When comparing the use of biodiesel fuel with regular, unleaded gas, the slightly higher cost of biodiesel will eventually go down over time and the cost of crude oil will initiate higher gas prices at the pump with no end in sight to these increases.

Biodiesel runs cleaner as well as cleans and lubricates engines which allows longer engine life and lower maintenance costs. A surge in biodiesel use is expected for the next few years which will create additional jobs for approximately 50,000 people.

US farmers can expect to see their bottom line increase by a billion dollars due to the use of biodiesel. Feedstock prices for vegetables oil will rise steadily and soybean prices are expected to increase by 10 cents per year. Governmental incentives are offered in the form of tax credits. The increased use of biodiesel will become even more profitable and will result in declining biodiesel prices as well as a decrease in the production cost of biodiesel.

It is a winning situation. Biodiesel fuel is user friendly to any diesel vehicle and the cost of using this fuel is decreasing steadily.

Backyard Biodiesel Production

Biodiesel is made from a very common ingredient, cooking oil and production of biodiesel can be done in your backyard. No modifications are required and the use of biodiesel is user friendly in any diesel vehicle.

With the use of biodiesel, environmental pollution is decreased and with the ever increasing fossil fuel prices, it is a cheaper means to fuel our sources of transportation. Using available ingredients, straightforward tools and effortless techniques, anybody can produce biodiesel at home.

When following these next steps, you can learn to make biodiesel in your own backyard…

* You will need an oil vessel for making the fuel, a setting tank, filtering system, 95% pure sulfuric acid and pure methanol, prepared mixture of methoxide and measuring beakers and pipettes.

* The oil will need to be filtered first, especially if it has been using in frying foods

* To get rid of water, heat the oil for 15 minutes. Place the heated oil in a setting tank and let stand for 24 hours. Then drain the water out.

* Dissolve all the solids after heating the precise measured oil. This has to be done in order to get the correct proportions of the other ingredients.

* With a ratio of 8% to the total measured oil, add 99% pure methanol.

* Continue mixing the oil with methanol for five minutes until the mixture starts looking cloudy.

* For every 1 liter of oil, add 1ml of 95% pure sulfuric acid. Sulfuric acid can be very dangerous. Use with extreme caution.

* Heat the mixture, stirring continuously at 35C. Remove from the heat and continue to stir for an additional two hours. Afterwards, leave the mixture for eight hours.

* At times the mixture may solidify. Reheat it slightly and add 12% methoxide mixture into it, stirring for an additional five minutes.

Producing biodiesel at home can be challenging but it is very rewarding. Once you have all the tools, you will be relying on a very inexpensive source of fuel, costing about $0.35 a gallon to make. With gas prices climbing to higher rates, the money save by producing biodiesel fuel can be spent on other budgeted household items.

Making Biodiesel Fuel

Have you ever thought that making biodiesel fuel is becoming an increasingly accepted substitute for regular gasoline and diesel? And no wonder. Gas prices are increasing at an alarming rate and with the economy the way it is, a cheaper alternative is in making biodiesel fuel and this can be done close to home.

Why do I say that? Because biodiesel fuel is made form vegetable oil, the same oil you use to cook your meals. Making biodiesel fuel is an easy process. The oil is converted by going through a biodiesel processor and the resultant fuel is used in diesel engines. Of course you will need to check with the manufacturer of your engine to see if biodiesel fuel is indeed an accepted means of running your vehicle. Kits are also available to convert diesel engines that may encounter problems with burning biodiesel.

The biodiesel processor is small and can be set up in a small space in your backyard. You are able to purchase a biodiesel processor by means of internet sites that sell the processor kits. You can even build one yourself. By searching the internet, you can purchase plans for making biodiesel fuel.

As with any project that involves high temperatures, you will need to be careful to avoid the risk of seriously burning yourself. It helps if the instructions are read thoroughly and applied. And if you have a hard time deciphering written instructions, than get to know someone who has already built and used a biodiesel processor. They have already gone through the potential mistakes and pretty much can steer you in the right direction as you undertake this simple project.

Kits used to make biodiesel can be expensive initially, even up to several thousand dollars, but the savings in the long run will be well worth the outlay of money. There does not seem to be future decreases in the gas prices and as people continue to complain, you will be glad that you no longer have to depend on the oil companies to fill your gas tank. You will go no further than your back yard. How easy is that!
